Size of Your Tent - Getting the Right Size

The size of the tent you choose is a very important consideration.

In prior articles we discussed how to pick a tent based on what weather conditions you are planning to camp in. Now we will discuss how to choose the correct size.

The first rule of thumb is never to buy a tent that you can't get into, walk around in, lie down in and stand up in. In other words find a camping store where the tents are set up.

Now consider how many adults and children will be sleeping in the tent. Will you be using sleeping bags and/or air mattresses? How much gear are you planning to take and stow in the tent? When you visit the store take your sleeping bag with you, or borrow one from the store. Lay it out on the floor in the tent. Now, consider three or four more, depending on the size of your group. How much room is left?

Most seasoned campers will tell you to take the manufacturers recommended number of people a tent will accommodate and divide it by two. If a manufacturer says a tent will accommodate 4 people, it's really 2. Most two men pup tents are not comfortable for two large adults and are definitely not comfortable for two adults and their gear. Remember if it rains all your gear will need to go into the tent along with you.

A small tent where there is no head room, such as a pup tent may be fine for some campers, but definitely not those that camp with children.

If you are going to have children camping with you another consideration is that in case of inclement weather you may have your children in your tent longer than you expected. This can definitely lead to some over crowding and short fuses. When you go out to look at tents remember this rule - at least 30 square feet per person is what you want to look for, perhaps even more if you have children. That way they can have a quiet corner to entertain themselves with board games in case of inclement weather.

Family Camping Tents

Though camping is not for everyone, there are many families that enjoy a weekend away in the wilderness. Some don’t go that far, but like to find an organized campground to camp for a few days or even a few weeks. Though some like to have travel campers when they go camping a lot, some people are only casually interested in camping, and they like to buy family camping tents for their time away from home. These are great, but there are some things to keep in mind when you buy them.

The best family camping tents are the ones that will fit everyone with a lot of comfort. Though some would say that there is nothing comfortable about a tent, having enough room for everyone is essential for a good trip. If everyone is cramped within the family camping tent, they are not going to sleep well and will be cranky the next morning. If you have a family of five, you should get a tent meant to fit even more people. That way everyone has room to move and even roll in the night. Not everyone sleeps in one position for the entire night. In fact, that is rather rare.

Family camping tents should also afford some privacy. Though people can take turns changing clothes within the tent, the best ones are the ones that have a few rooms to them. They aren’t noise proof, of course, but they can allow someone to change will others are sleeping in the main section of the tent. The extra rooms can also mean that those who don’t like to sleep right next to everyone else may be able to have some space of their own. If someone wants to take a nap in these family camping tents during the day, they have the space to do so.

Some don’t like the price tag that is associated with the larger family camping tents. However, if you are going to live in something for a few days or a few weeks, you want something that is as nice as you can afford. That will make everyone happier and will mean that everyone will enjoy camping more. Good family camping tents also have ample ventilation and are water proof. Buying something too small and sub par will only make everyone on the trip miserable and they will be less likely to wish to repeat the experience.

Camping Disasters

Have you ever gone camping to find that it rained the entire time you were out? Well, if so you probably thought it was a camping disaster. Even though you may not have enjoyed walking along the creek in the sunshine or lazily watching a beaver build a dam while fishing in a pond, you nonetheless have a disaster camping story to remind you that the greatest camping places have moods too.

There are many things that can go wrong while camping and it all depends on the location you choose. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to a bear rummaging through your camp looking for food! That could spell disaster for this camping trip, even if the bear finds what it needs and then decides to leave without making a threatening scene.

Camping during a severe thunderstorm can really make you aware of the powers of nature and maybe even keep you up but if you are prepared you can weather the storm on this camping adventure. In the case of a storm you will need to have put an extra tarp under the tent and you will need to dig small trenches all the way around your tent for the downpour of rain to follow. If you do not the rain will puddle up around your tent and seep in from the floor. So make the trenches around the tent and anywhere in your camping site that you need to remain puddle free. It can help to put your camping equipment and tent on a slight grade.

Camping during a severe wind storm is particularly annoying and can be a terrible disaster if you let it. For this reason it can be wise to set up a lean-to or wind break that can alleviate the catastrophic event. A wind break for your camping spot can be designed within minutes between a couple of the sturdiest trees in your campingvicinity.

A forest fire can devastate camping if lightening strikes a nearby tree. Many times lightening can start a forest fire, but most often it is put out by the accompanying rains before it gets out of hand. This camping disaster is not very common but you should always have an escape plan in any camping situation. A forest fire can also be caused by a camping enthusiast being careless with their fire habits. For this reason you must always put outcamping fires cold! This means with plenty of water, and until the fire pit is cold. Never allow a member of yourcamping party to play with fire at any time. Please never allow yourself or them to discard cigarettes in any unsafe place.

A camping disaster is never planned. So make sure you do your part so you can be ready in the event of acamping disaster and possibly prevent it from ruining your camping pleasures altogether. Most of the time you can avoid camping during a potentially bad situation by consulting the weather service for that area and by taking an emergency shortwave radio for continued updates.

To prove to my 9 year old Niece that everything She read’s on the internet is not true & Accurate!

Please Note everything written below is inaccurate, is not a fact, just purely written to prove that not all information on the internet is accurate.

She has grown up in a world where “just google it” is a common phrase, and she has got the impression because it is written on the internet, that is must be true, while I was growing up, I grew up with the formation of the internet and learnt the hard ways that things aren’t always true, and mastered the skills at university to tell genuine sites from those that are spinning lies.

We are not saying that the internet is full of lies, in fact 99% of the web is accurate and has allowed us to become more knowledge, settle pub arguments with one search on the Iphone, and allow us to search new subjects without leaving our own homes.

We can now practically live our lives from a screen, from education, to food shopping, to meeting your future partner and has been the biggest technology advancement of all time.

But from below, these are all in accurate, and are her words to prove that anything can be put on the internet.

Also if this helps somebody else to teach their children / relatives about the dangers of believing everything on the is true, if you want more statements adding below, feel free to email us or comment below and we will add when we get chance.

-          The Earth is Red

-          The soaps are real life

-          Pigs are Blue

-          Doncaster is the Capital of England

-          The water is made out of ink

Trying to think of 5 lies was pretty hard.

What to look for when purchasing a new tent?

What to look for when purchasing a new tent?

This is from over a decade of working in a Camping Retail outlet, and from over 20 years’ experience of camping all over the Britain and a bit further afield.

The size

Is it just you going camping or is it the whole family going, are you using the tent for backing packing or will you be chucking it in the boot when camping.

If you’re only going away for weekend breaks don’t go buying a large 8 man tent for the two of you, you will spend too much time putting it up, that you won’t have that much time to relax, whereas if there are just two going away for a two week break, don’t purchase a small two man tent, as you won’t have enough space to put all your stuff.

Who’s putting it up

If it’s just going to be you putting it up I would recommend a Dome tent, easily put the poles together and the tent goes up and stays up while you’re putting in the pegs. Whereas with a tunnel tents it helps to have someone to hold the poles while you peg it in.

Difference between tunnel and Dome

Tunnel tents are usually the same height in the whole tent, where as a dome tent usually has great height in the centre, but then slopes down around the edges, but stands up better against the wind.

Hydrostatic Head

This is the waterproofing level on the tent, the recommend level for Britain is 1500HH. We WONT sell any tent that is not at least to this level.

If you are planning on going camping for a weekend every summer then you are probably ok with a 1500HH level, whereas if you’re going away a few times a year for long weekend, weeks away you’re probably better spending a little more and got for a tent with at least 3000 to 5000. Well we all know how often it rains in Britain (Every time I’m camping, so if I’m camping I would stay at home lol).

Groundsheet

There are two types sewn in groundsheet and ones you can pull out.

This again depends on what type of camping and who and what your taking.

If it’s just you and the other half. Then get a sewn in ground sheet stops the bugs and wind from getting in, whereas if you’re taking a dog then get a tent without a sewn in groundsheet to make it easy to clean.

Raising Money for Teenage Cancer Unit

As the managing Director of a Yorkshire company and we’re proud to be from Yorkshire, thought we would help a charity to raise some much need funds to help build a new Teenage Cancer Unit in Hull.

We have set ourselves a modest target of just £200, but we would love to smash this target.

“Help a Capital Child supports Teenage Cancer Trust units across the UK, and the funds you raise will fund specialist hospital units and care for teenagers and young people with cancer.

For six teenagers a day, life changes overnight when they are told they have cancer.

We want to help make sure that cancer doesn’t stop these teenagers in their tracks and that they are given the best possible quality of life and chances of survival.” (Source Capitalfm.com)

If every one of our users just donates £1 we will be able to raise a lot of money for a very good cause.

We will be sharing our fitness journey on our twitter account, so check out how well were doing/

So you’re going to London this summer for the Olympics and want some where cheap and enjoyable to stay.

So you have bought your tickets, got your travel arrangements sorted but the hotels which are left are either too expensive or just not what you are looking for. Have you thought about camping.

There is a wide range of camping / caravan parks, some set up just for the Olympics. Some of these sites even have mini Olympics set up for the evening so after a hard day watching all the action you can try and recreate that special moment.

We have created a special part of our site especially for the Olympics, with each event listed and the nearest camping / caravan sites.

Please Visit http://campingsitesinyorkshire.co.uk/olympic-london-2012-camping-sites.php and chose the events you are visiting to find your ideal site and get a different type of Olympic experience.

There are the small 5 pitch campsites up to one site which can take up to 40,00 Olympic goers at once, so there is a site to meet your needs.

The Olympics are once in a lifetime opportunity so instead of staying in the more traditional types of accommodation why not try something different in 2012.
